About Your Next Job

Project description
Regulatory frameworks are increasingly adopting animal-free New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for developmental and reproductive toxicity (DART) testing, creating a need for robust in vitro platforms that can accurately predict teratogenicity across multiple species, including humans, rats, and rabbits. The aim of this project is to develop state-of-the-art stem cell-based screening platforms that improve species-specific prediction of developmental toxicity while providing mechanistic insight into teratogenic effects.
At Toxys, we previously developed ReproTracker, a human pluripotent stem cell-based assay that uses tri-lineage differentiation into cardiomyocytes, hepatocytes, and neuronal cells and has demonstrated high predictive performance for developmental toxicity. Building on this platform, you will contribute to the development of the RatDevTox assay using rat embryonic stem cells (ratESCs) to establish an in vitro method for predicting developmental toxicity in rats. This project will advance the translation of species-specific in vivo findings into human-relevant in vitro models, improving both the prediction and mechanistic understanding of developmental toxicity.

About Your Next Colleagues

About Toxys
Toxys is an innovative Dutch biotech company that develops unique in vitro laboratory tests for the safety assessment of novel medicines, chemicals, cosmetics and food. Toxys offers disruptive and proprietary technology as a service, as test kits and as a licensed technology to its clients. Toxys developed and offers the unique ToxTracker®, ReproTracker® and ToxProfiler assays. The assays accurately predict toxicity in humans and can provide mechanistic insight into the toxic mechanisms of chemicals.

About Your Tasks and Responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic master student to join us for a minimum 6-month internship (starting in September, no later than Oct-2026). During this internship, you will work with ratESCs and investigate their differentiation into cardiomyocytes as an in vitro model for developmental toxicity testing. You will gain hands-on experience with embryonic stem cell culture and differentiation.

About Your Skills and Experience

A master student who:
• Is currently pursuing master's degree in biology, Toxicology, Biomedical Sciences, Molecular
Biology, or a related field;
• Has experience with cell culture, experience with stem cells is a must;
• Has experience with RNA extraction, qPCR (analysis) and high content microscopy;
• Has knowledge on stem cell biology, developmental biology;
• Is motivated and eager to learn new techniques;
• Is able to work independently while also being a good team player;
• Has good communication and scientific reporting skills (in English)

About Your Benefits

Toxys Offers
• A minimum 6-month internship in an innovative research environment.
• The opportunity to gain hands-on R&D experience while learning how scientific research is
applied in an industrial setting.
• Guidance and supervision from experienced scientists.
• The opportunity to develop independent thinking and problem-solving skills
