About Your Next Job

We are seeking an experienced Director Commercial Laboratory to lead the strategic, commercial, and operational direction of our Commercial Laboratory. In this key leadership role, you will drive the development and promotion of our product and service portfolio, foster customer‑driven innovation, and ensure high‑quality service delivery in line with ISO and GCLP accreditation standards.

You will oversee both Sales & Marketing and Commercial Laboratory operations, including production, logistics, workflows, financial performance, personnel management, and customer satisfaction—while upholding the company’s quality standards.  

Who are we?

GenomeScan is an ISO‑accredited leader in Next Generation Sequencing services, providing state‑of‑the‑art tools for fast, affordable, and high‑quality patient diagnostics—crucial for identifying disease causes and supporting personalized treatment plans. GenomeScan drives innovation through close partnerships with medical centres and research laboratories. We take on a diverse range of challenging projects using advanced Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques, including Whole Genome and Gene-panel Sequencing, RNA- and Methyl sequencing, and various bioinformatics pipelines. Our laboratory is equipped with Illumina, Ion Torrent, and Nanopore sequencers, as well as robotic systems for automated sample processing. GenomeScan complies with international quality standards and holds ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. In addition to our current ISO accreditation, we are implementing GCLP guidelines in our laboratory to improve and expand our services for clinical trials.

About Your Tasks and Responsibilities

What will you do?

You will:

  • Oversee strategic planning, drive portfolio development and continuous improvement to ensure alignment with corporate goals and regulatory standards.
  • Lead daily Commercial Laboratory operations to deliver high‑quality, efficient, and customer‑focused laboratory services supported by appropriate infrastructure.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and development to the Commercial Laboratory, Sales & Marketing team while fostering a high‑performance, collaborative culture.
  • Manage resource allocation and budgeting to ensure efficient operations and act as the primary liaison in cross‑functional initiatives.
  • Drive sales performance by developing and executing Sales, Marketing, and key account strategies while identifying new business opportunities and leading the commercialization of new products and services.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, key accounts, vendors, and partners, while monitoring market trends, competitor activity, and product developments to make constructive commercial decisions.
  • Ensure full adherence to ISO/IEC 17025, GCLP, and internal quality standards while guaranteeing safe and high‑quality execution of all laboratory activities.
  • Identify, assess, and escalate compliance issues or material risks to the Executive Board to safeguard operational integrity.

About Your Skills and Experience

What do we ask for?

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Molecular Biology (or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience, with a minimum of 5 years, with Next Generation Sequencing.
  • Proven expertise with quality systems, including GCLP and ISO 17025/15189.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with experience managing high-performing teams.
  • Proven track record in Business Unit and/or laboratory management, including budget and commercial responsibility.
  • Strong record of achieving sustainable business growth and meeting targets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; effective in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Fluency in Dutch and English both in word and writing.
  • Strong understanding of the academic and industrial life sciences market.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced international environment in both managerial and commercial roles.

  • Salary between € 8.320, - and € 10.545, - gross per month, based on your knowledge and experience.
  • An end-of-year bonus/ 13th month payment (8.3% of gross annual salary).
  • A holiday allowance (8% of gross annual salary).
  • A total of 200 holiday hours (based on full-time employment for a full year) with the possibility of buying/selling leave hours.
  • A collective pension scheme, with 50% of the contribution paid by GenomeScan (Partner pension is included).
  • A travel allowance or NS Business Card for your commute to and from Leiden.
